June is the time for fireflies in Japan! In the North of Okayama Prefecture, in the South of Maniwa City, is a former-town called Hokubo, also known as the “Home of the Fireflies”.
With festivals happening the first two weeks of June, firefly-friendly lights along the river, and direct buses running for your convenience, it’s an amazing time to visit! A local international share house makes staying over easy, too.
You need a good camera, a tripod and long-exposure to get any good photos – and even then it’s difficult! But even with good photos, they look so much better in real life.
